I was on a bus in Eltham South East London, where Stephen Lawrence was murdered. The bus was busy, I could hear a man’s voice shouting , “what’s with all the coons on the bus” I was horrified, but more so because no one challenged him. I did.. but not in a threatening way, he was an old man, with crutches so I asked him what had happened to his leg. He said he had an operation, so I asked him who had performed the surgery, he said he was a P***, I asked him about the care he had received from the nurses, he said blackies. So I asked him if he had kids, he said he had 3, none of them in jobs. So I told him that if he had spoken to me like that, I’d have left him to rot in hospital and told him no wonder your kids didn’t have jobs if they were as stupid and ignorant like him. When he got off the bus, a few people told me well done for what I had said, I told them to go to hell as they should have helped me!

Imagine been a young girl and trying to shave your skin off with a razor , when your mum asked you why you did it you answer” because I want to be like my friends”.   THAT CHILD WAS ME. Because of peoples mentality towards me as a black child .

As a child, I remember walking across the road on a zebra crossing with my mum (who was white) and on one side of the road, the cars stopped but on the other side a lorry kept on going. He shouted abuse at my mum, calling her a n**** lover and a traitor. I was about 6 years old. I remember the look on my mum’s face, and how other people just looked at us. No one stopped to ask if we were okay.
