Black women are well known for their versatility when it comes to hair styles.  From curly to straight, relaxed to natural, every style created is beautiful and unique.  Northern Women of Colour conducted a poll of hair and products in July amongst our members.  The results show

  • 56% had natural hair
  • 23% relaxed their hair
  • 3% have a Brazillian blow-dry
  • 3% are  transitioning

The clear winner is natural;  we are seeing more ladies embrace their natural locs with beautiful imaginative styles.  Gone are the days of wanting to emulate the straight European look.  Whether its plaits, locs, cane rows or you have your own style, natural is the way forward.

Lots of discussions took place regarding black-owned hair products however as soon as a product was identified as black-owned, an article would pop up that it had been bought out by the bigger corporates.  Many people would sell their business for millions if given the opportunity, is that not the reason why the majority of people go into self-employment?  To become independent, self-efficient and comfortable in later life.

Twenty-twenty has taught us to support black businesses, hence the directories been created to promote the talent which has been all around in the UK, unfortunately unnoticed.  If we support the black business they can grow and fulfil their dreams.  If we circulate our money amongst black businesses we can grow our community and create wealth. Maybe one day we will be one of the large corporate businesses who can support our black-owned businesses or buy the products, creating jobs and building a strong economical black community.
